Fledglings on the Common
Our curriculum
All children will be respected and their individuality and potential recognised, valued, and nurtured. Activities and opportunities are offered for children to explore, acknowledge, and value differences between themselves and others.
Children start to learn about the world around them from the moment they are born. The care and education offered by Fledglings helps children to continue to do this by providing all children with interesting activities that are developmentally appropriate.
Our ethos is to use nature and nurture to help children to develop. We follow the core Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum (EYFS), alongside offering play and exploration through forest school principals. Forest school principals offer children opportunities for hands-on learning experiences in our local woodland and garden areas. Children are able to develop a lifelong love and understanding of the natural environment whilst developing the core skills of the forest school ethos, namely development of self-esteem, creativity and confidence and the ability to assess risk and make their own decisions.
The EYFS is set out in a document, published by the Department for Education. The guidance divides children’s learning and development into three prime areas and four specific areas, these are as follows:
Prime areas
- Personal, social, and emotional
- Communication and language
- Physical development
Specific areas
- Mathematics
- Expressive arts and design
- Literacy
- Understanding the world
For each area, the guidance sets out learning goals. These goals state what it is expected that children will know and be able to do by the end of the reception year of their education. For each early learning goal, the guidance sets out stepping stones, which describe the stages through which children are likely to pass as they move to achievement of the early learning goals.
